All locations are served either by a private well or by the Long Pond Water District, a separate public corporation. If you are using town roads, please obey the speed limits and road restrictions, and don’t throw your trash in our yards. If there are storms, please check on your neighbors to make sure they are safe. Report downed trees, flooded roads, or other hazards to our Road Commissioner, Joey Clark. When roads are posted for hazards, please DO NOT remove signs or cones that have been put out! You would be endangering others and stealing from the town. Sorrento Pollinator Meadow Project ELLSWORTH AMERICAN “Sorrento group works to establish pollinator sanctuary” May 10, 2023 Updated May 10, 2023 SORRENTO — Near Sorrento’s town offices is a large granite sculpture called “Gate of the Sun.” It dominates a triangular piece of land known as Hamilton Park, which is now slated to get a facelift by a group of 13 residents who responded to an initial call for interest in developing a pollinator meadow on the site. This multi-year project will transform the place, now covered with spotty grass that suffers from grub infestation, into a hill vibrant with color and the sound of bees hunting for pollen. On a recent Wednesday in gray, drizzly weather, residents brought cultivators and spades. Some started unearthing and weeding the old gravel path and plot surrounding the sculpture. Others flattened cardboard boxes and removed tape then laid pieces on the ground and covered them with soil to begin killing grass in an environmentally friendly way to make space for wildflowers. Plans were made to make signs saying “Pollinator Meadow in Progress.” The current group intends to work in the park Wednesday mornings into the fall, and hopes to visit similar area projects to get ideas. Needs are simple — hand tools and gloves brought by helpers, perhaps some gravel donations, cardboard and the ability to water until the native meadow plants take root. Town Wish List: There are always things we could use (but that didn’t fit into the budget). Here is a list of items that we have identified as “wish we had”…check back frequently as it will be updated on a regular basis. Wouldn't it be great to have town movie nights? And have a screen for showing the documents being discussed at meetings? We could really use a large screen and projector for the Community Building. It is an architecturally distinguished colonial revival building that has virtually always been at the heart of summer community life. In 1995 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and around that time it was officially separated from the Sorrento Village Improvement Association (SVIA) to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization operating as Sorrento Public Library Corp. Frenchman Bay Library Hidden away behind some out of control forsythias at the back of a parking lot in Sullivan, is a gem of an up to date library! Frenchman Bay Library houses eclectic collections by Maine authors, full series of popular mysteries, seas stories, contemporary new acquisitions, old standbys — and the children’s section is very nice. It’s a friendly, unpretentious place made all the more interesting because it is funded primarily by donations. Staff are knowledgeable, helpful and willing to order books on interlibrary loan. The library hosts community events, ranging from needlework to book readings to yoga to health and wellness. They are committed to facilitating lifelong learning and sharing of ideas. The library has a librarian who can help you find a book-whether it’s on their shelves or through a nationwide book lending program. She is helped by a network of loyal volunteers who volunteer their time and talents. Come volunteer or find a book. It’s a delightful place to be. Ellsworth Public Library This is a full-service library located in downtown Ellsworth. Sorrento is a supporting community of the library and therefore residents of our town are entitled to a FREE membership card. You’ll need your driver’s license with your Sorrento address (or mail providing this information). In addition to all the fantastic library services and programming, you can also get free passes to the Maine Discovery Museum (on a first come first serve basis).
